Curriculum

Bailey Green Primary and Nursery School together with Bailey’s Butterflies.

Our Curriculum.

At Bailey Green Primary School, we have designed a curriculum which is built upon our mission statement and 4 key values, aiming  to give our children the best possible start to their education by developing their curiosity, imagination and desire to learn. It takes into account the needs of the  21st Century, British Values and is ambitious in providing our children with the knowledge, skills and learning behaviours needed to become successful life-long learners.

Intent

At the heart of our school is the commitment to provide a purposeful, meaningful curriculum that fully prepares learners for the next steps in their school career and opens doors to the wider world. Our curriculum is ambitious; provoking curiosity and excitement, and we strive to model and encourage a love of learning. Our curriculum is topic-based and has been designed to be progressive, building upon prior knowledge from birth (Bailey’s Butterflies) through to Year 6.

Learning experiences are designed to be sequential, ensuring that knowledge is cumulative. We provide learning opportunities outside the classroom, linked to subject knowledge so that children have a deeper understanding and access to a richer bank of language and vocabulary. Links between different subject areas are exploited in order to consolidate and embed learning across the curriculum.

Implementation

We plan our lessons with clear learning objectives, matched to the National Curriculum and based upon the teacher’s detailed knowledge of each child, striving to ensure that all tasks set are appropriate to each child’s level of ability, offering both support and challenge. Our lesson plans make clear the expected outcomes for each lesson. We assess individual children who do not achieve the expected level for the lesson through questioning, daily AfL and marking, and we use this information when planning for the next lesson.

Progress is assessed regularly. At the end of each term, assessment data is gathered and progress is checked by subject coordinators and the Senior Leadership Team. Children are expected to make good or better progress in all subjects and this individual progress is tracked. In cases where children are identified as making ‘less than expected progress’ in English, Maths, rapid interventions are put in place to address gaps in learning.

Impact

We aim for children to leave Bailey Green Primary School with a secure understanding of the academic content; with the understanding of how to be socially, morally, spiritually and culturally responsible; how to make positive contributions to the local community and how to endeavour to be the best that they can be. We strive to ensure our curriculum provides our children with the skills to be respectful, skillful, ambitious and with a thirst for life and all it has to offer.

Early Years Curriculum at Bailey Green

Our Early Years curriculum covers seven areas and the characteristics of effective learning. It is carefully planned and progressively mapped from Birth to Five, across Butterflies nursery to Reception. We have used the Development Matters document as support to ensure all seven areas of the curriculum are covered and prior knowledge and skills are built upon, providing children with high quality interactions in a play-based environment and giving the children real life experiences which are at the core of our curriculum offer.

The starting point of education in the Early Years, are the needs and characteristics of the individual child and our curriculum reflects this. Each minute of every day offers opportunities for different aspects of learning during adult-led tasks and child-initiated play. We ensure the planning of provision and learning opportunities are done through a rich and stimulating environment both indoors and outdoors, as this instils a positive and motivational attitude to learning, and is a platform for their learning as they transition into KS1 and beyond.
